Rate Floor — what your hour has to cost
A calculator that finds the hourly rate below which a job loses money, before the quote goes out. The inputs live in the link, so a result can be sent to someone.

Most freelancers price from what they hope, not what they need
I have quoted from the number the last client paid, and from a rate somebody mentioned in a forum. Neither of those is connected to what the year actually costs.
So I could win every job and still finish the year behind, because the rate never had to be justified to anyone, least of all to me.
Show the steps and put the numbers in the link
I cut it to five inputs: what I want to keep, business costs, billable hours a week, weeks not working, and the share set aside for tax. That last one is where the quiet maths happens, because every dollar billed has to carry its own tax.
The output is three numbers with one sentence each: the floor per hour, a day rate, and the minimum for a twenty-hour job. I round them up, because a floor I round down is not a floor.
A panel underneath shows every step, so I can check the answer with a calculator, and a bar splits the money into what I keep, what costs take and what tax takes.
All the state lives in the URL, so a result is a link I can send someone, and nothing is stored on a server. When the inputs produce an implausible rate, the warning names the box most likely mistyped. Thirteen tests hold the calculation.
